University of Queensland’s the Global Change Institute won the Large Building Projects category

Last year in Queensland’s National Steel Excellence Awards it was mostly industrial and educational workplaces which topped the award charts. On 8th August 2014 the winners were announced with UQ’s Global Change Institute taking out first place for Large Projects—it also received a National Highly Commended.

What the judges had to say

One of the judges described the building as:

“elegantly realised project with subtlety and precise expression on a sensitive site, well scaled and inviting, it presents its functions and low carbon credentials in a stylish and inviting way.”

The Global Change Institute is Australia’s first carbon-neutral building. According to National Steel Institute magazine:

“Steel is an integral part of the building’s strength, architecture, and sustainability, making up the soaring atrium structure, central floating stairs and the sun shading façade.”

BridgeFab’s role: taking care of the creative

BridgeFab offer clients everything they need: from drafting and fabrication right through to erection. As a company we pride ourselves on always meeting deadlines, working well with architects, and providing the latest 3D technology for the best results.

Part of BridgeFab’s involvement in this project included:

“The arched roof beams fabricated from combinations of rolled circular hollow sections and flat plate stitched together with intermittent vertical plates for stiffer sections. Steel frames several sustainable features in the building including the green wall which is composed of steel trusses that filter air which flows through the atrium.”

One of the advantages of hiring BridgeFab is: we are able to carry out commercial scale boutique steel fabrication. We also carry out the usual steel fabrication work.
